FAQ

What is Colostrum?

Colostrum is the first form of milk produced by the mammary glands which provides essential nutrients and immune protection, setting the foundation for newborn’s health and development during the first few days of life, and beyond.

Nutrient-rich - highly concentrated in proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals

High in antibodies - particularly IgA which helps protect against infections by forming a protective layer in the baby’s intestines

Easily digestible - suitable for a newborns immature digestive system

Various growth factors - help in development and maturation of the newborn

Laxative effect - helping newborns pass meconium

Immune support - help with early development of baby’s immune system, provide critical protection during initial days of life

Low volume, high impact - smaller quantities than mature milk but significant on the newborn’s health and development

Why Antenatal Expressing Matters?

Collecting colostrum before baby is born is one of the most safe and effective steps to take to ensure your newborn has access to colostrum immediately after birth

Facilitates a positive start by reducing stress and improving confidence in breastfeeding

Proven to increase production and protect your long term milk supply

Can help manage and prevent hypoglycaemia in newborns, particularly those at risk, such as babies of diabetic mothers or those with IUGR

Reduce the risk of jaundice as early feeding of colostrum can help lower the risk by promoting gut motility which helps expel excess bilirubin

Convenient stock of colostrum can be useful in situations where immediate breastfeeding might be challenging, ie post-cesarean recovery or baby has difficulty latching

Is Antenatal Expressing Safe?

A large Australian Study (the DAME study) showed that women with diabetes and a low risk pregnancy can safely express breastmilk in late pregnancy. Please always check with your midwife or obstetrician before expressing to ensure it is right for you.

When is the recommended time to commence Antenatal Expressing?

The Australian Breastfeeding Association recommends the best time to start antenatal expressing is once you’ve completed 36 weeks of pregnancy.
